2020 Opel Insignia Spied at the Nurburgring, Looks a Bit Sportier Ahead of Debut

Everything swings on the quality of the redesign the Germans have planned for 2020, as well as Peugeot's technology.

As if it wasn't enough that the sedan market is shrinking by the day in Europe, Opel is now separate from General Motors, so costs aren't shared as easily. But the facelift will, at least for a few more years, offer the best of both worlds - a global platform and engines specific to the European market from Peugeot/PSA.

Only a few days ago, we showed you what the Insignia should look like without camouflage, as the Buick Regal sister car got leaked in China. At the same time, the Holden version from Australia should also get these updates. But Vauxhall killed off the Insignia Sport Tourer version recently, showing how bad things might become.

Fans of cool design or French cars might disagree, but we think the Insignia is worth more than its new-found sister, the Peugeot 508. In a segment that's dominated by fleet sales, you want the German car with huge legroom, not a try-hard coupe that barely fits adults. Even so, the engines of these two might be the same now.

The 2019 model year facelift for the Astra reveals what's going on. The smaller Opel model got a range made up almost completely of Peugeot engines, namely the 1.5 diesel and 1.2-liter gasoline turbo unit. Power levels have gone down significantly, from 200 hp to 145 hp max.

Both of the above-mentioned small engines should also power the 2020 Insignia, though you might still have Peugeot's 180 horsepower diesel available. This particular prototype appears to have a mix of parts on it, different colored brakes, GSi wheels, dual exhaust tips, but no GSi front bumper.

The most likely performance-oriented powertrain is a 1.6 "PureTech" system from the 508 GT, which makes 225 hp. On the other hand, it's possible that they're testing the 2-liter powertrain for the Buick and Holden models.
