Instead, it resides in the field of near-premium brands, and its niche flair has always been an attraction for certain fans. For example, it has one of the coolest little sports cars of all time, the MX-5 Miata, but also produces big, hulking three-row family-oriented crossover SUVs like the CX-90 with inline-six and PHEV powertrains.
As such, maybe it's no wonder that last year it had a great stint across the US automotive market - Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) reported full-year sales of no less than 424,382 units, a very satisfying jump of 17% in terms of sales compared to 2023. With that performance, it easily beat luxury carmakers like BMW (up 2.5% to 371k) or Mercedes-Benz (+9% to more than 324k) while it also launched out loud at the sight of the dismal performance of Audi – which dropped 14% to just 197k deliveries!
Logically, all regional Mazda divisions want a piece of the sales pie. For example, in Europe, the company mirrors the US lineup consisting of the big CX-70 and CX-90 with the related CX-60 and CX-80 while also banking on the classic models such as the CX-5 for great sales. However, that's not enough, and the Japanese automaker wants to give it another try in terms of EV models with help from China. So, they recently introduced the Mazda6e sedan, a potential foe for the ubiquitous Tesla Model 3.
Anyone who knows their Mazdas has already recognized the Mazda6e as a version of China's EZ-6, coming with a choice of two battery packs and two power options. The most potent version has 255 hp and sprints to 62 mph (100 kph) in 7.6 seconds, while the most frugal option can also deliver a range of 345 miles on a single charge. Thanks to the classic Kodo styling language, it's also easily recognizable as a Mazda. At the same time, the liftback sedan body style should also help it fight the Tesla Model 3 from a practical standpoint.
Alas, someone dwelling across the parallel universes of vehicular CGI – a member of the imaginative guild of digital car content creators, believes the Mazda6e should become even more practical with a station wagon body-style derivative. So, the virtual artist tucked behind the AscarissDesign moniker on social media has a big craving for Mazda's upcoming Mazda6e all-electric model, and in his latest behind-the-scenes making-of video, he converts the liftback sedan into a proper grocery getter – a classic station wagon.
So, what do you think? Should Mazda try to beat the Tesla Model 3 with the practicality factor and also bring to Europe a Mazda6e Touring option besides the liftback sedan, or are they doomed to fail to make a dent across the Old Continent's landscape due to the current EV slowdown?
