American movie actor George Clooney was injured Tuesday in a motor scooter accident on the Italian island of Sardinia, where he is working on a miniseries.

Clooney, 57, had just left his hotel on a scooter when he crashed into a Mercedes, Italy's Chi magazine said on its Web site. A police officer said Clooney had the right of way, and the Mercedes had failed to yield.

Officer Alberto Cicognani, one of the responding police officers, told the New York Times that Clooney "slammed" into the windshield. And an Italian newspaper tweeted a photo showing the smashed windshield of the Mercedes, leading to concern among fans about his condition.

Clooney was taken to hospital with a possible injury and later discharged from the emergency room with a slight contusion on his knee, state news agency Ansa said. He is "recovering at home and will be fine," his publicist said.
Local police are investigating, the news agency Ansa said. Clooney is in Sardinia to film a miniseries based on Joseph Heller's book "Catch 22."

Clooney first achieved fame for his part in the TV medical drama "ER." He has since won an Oscar for his role in the movie "Syriana" in 2006 and for co-producing the film "Argo" in 2012.
