The Volkswagen Atlas is a mid-size crossover SUV that was developed primarily for the North American market. Since the 2018 model year, it has remained in the lineup above the long-wheelbase Tiguan compact CUV but slightly below the smaller but more premium-oriented Touareg SUV.

However, the vehicle based on the traditional Volkswagen Group MQB platform is also sold outside the US and Canadian markets in places like China, where it's known as the Volkswagen Teramont. Even the five-seat VW Atlas Cross Sport is named differently – there, it's known as the VW Teramont X. Before we start debating which name is better and less confusing when switching from the three-row to the five-seat versions, let's note how the German automaker chose China as the initial venue for the arrival of the second-generation Volkswagen Teramont Pro, set to commence production on the MQB Evo platform in Ningbo, Zhejiang at SAIC-VW.

The new three-row family hauler likely previews the second generation of the aging VW Atlas SUV, and there may be only small differences between the two models. As far as the Chinese model is concerned, the all-new Volkswagen Teramont Pro is 203.1 inches long, 78.4 inches wide, and 70.4 inches tall, so it's a smidge larger than the VW Atlas. It comes trendy with dual LED light bars at the front and a single one plus LED pixel taillights at the rear, and it even has a closed radiator grille, although it's not an EV.

Going up against the norm, the VW Teramont Pro has oversized LEDs both front and rear, plus the flagship R-Line trim has large-ish 21-inch wheels and big side vents at the front. The seven-seat interior is dominated by the new dashboard riddled with screens – the driver's instrument cluster is mirrored with a third display for the front passenger. At the same time, the central touchscreen has grown even larger than on the American Volkswagen Atlas. Under the hood, the Teramont Pro comes with an interesting engine – the first of the fifth-generation EA888 setup, a 2.0-liter turbo four-pot running the Miller cycle packing 268 hp and 295 lb-ft, no less than 51 hp and 37 lb-ft more than its Chinese predecessor.

It remains to be seen whether or not the 2026 or 2026 Volkswagen Atlas will be identical to the 2025 Volkswagen Teramont Pro, but the big seven-seat SUV has already attracted the attention of members of the imaginative realm of digital car content creators dwelling across the parallel universes of vehicular CGI. More precisely, Nikita Chuicko, the virtual artist better known as kelsonik on social media, thinks that now is the right CGI time to work on the 2025 VW Teramont Pro and compare it to the North American first-gen VW Atlas for good measure.

As for the pixel master's unofficial, hypothetical design project, it's a simple one – since the Volkswagen Teramont Pro was already showcased in the sporty R-Line trim, the CGI expert just made sure the proportions are much more logical by adding a set of larger aftermarket wheels with a modern Y-spoke design and putting massive crimson brake calipers behind them. So, what do you think? Suppose you also want our two cents on the matter. In that case, the VW Teramont Pro is a great preview of the next VW Atlas – and we hope the beefy EA888evo5 engine will also make its way to North America, including in other VW Group products after Audi and VW have reportedly decided to use gas engines a bit longer than originally planned.
