An All-Electric Advent Calendar
The other products hidden in the social media advent calendar are EVs – including the global-market BMW iX1 and iX2 – so we can probably safely assume that the German automaker will be showing off another electric offering on December 24. And the silhouette seems to be that of a "Sports Activity Vehicle," company parlance for crossover. As BMW's newest EV, the iX3 is conspicuous in its absence, so we think that might be the one getting some attention on Christmas Eve. When it revealed the electric SUV earlier this year, BMW only announced specifications for the 50 xDrive model, meaning there could be another variant on the way.
We presume the Germans are planning to offer the iX3 in a more performance-oriented trim, potentially called the M60 xDrive to slot in above the 50 xDrive and mirror the i4 Gran Coupe. Considering the fastback five-door makes 593 horsepower using BMW's older electric motor technology, an iX3 M60 powered by Gen6 motors could produce well in excess of 600 hp, which could put its sprint to 60 miles per hour in the sub-4-second range. For comparison, the iX3 50 xDrive produces 463 horses and 476 pound-feet of torque, and it hits 60 in 4.7 seconds, according to the company.
It Could Also Be A "Sports Activity Coupe"
In the same vein that BMW offers the internal-combustion X3 and X5 alongside chop-top variants called the X4 and X6, the automaker also plans a sleeker, coupe-like version of the iX3 that'll wear iX4 branding. It's possible that the Christmas Eve reveal will be for that vehicle, which has been spotted testing in near-production form. If that's the case, expect the iX4 to launch with similar specs as its more traditionally shaped sibling, including a 50 xDrive trim with dual-motor all-wheel drive and the aforementioned 463 hp and 476 lb-ft.
A sleeker, lower roofline could improve aero, meaning the iX4 could travel even further than the 400 miles per charge that BMW claims for the iX3. We also presume that the coupe-styled crossover will also offer a higher-performance variant, although we doubt the company will launch that before confirming it for the bread-and-butter SUV.
Since BMW is revealing a new product on Christmas Eve, we doubt that it will be anything more earth-shaking than a new trim or body style of an existing product. The automaker's employees probably want to enjoy the holidays as much as any of us, and scheduling a big, important debut just before closing for the year doesn't seem very logical. But we'll definitely keep our eyes peeled for whatever comes our way when that door bearing the number 24 opens up, bringing you the news as appropriate.
