There seems to be something in the works for everyone, at least for now, with money thrown at a new modular EV platform revealed earlier this year, as well as indications that legacy nameplates, including the iconic Ford Mustang, will carry on with existing and new configurations. Here's a little preview of what's to come, with an eye towards Ford's enduring pony car.
More Combustion-Only Muscle Is On The Way
The big, good news from the latest Automotive News report about the future of Ford's product lineup concerns the iconic Ford Mustang. As with the successful reintroduction and expansion of brand families like the F-150 and Bronco, Ford has big plans for a new Mustang "family" of models. According to the report, up first will be a new tune of the EcoBoost Mustang with help from RTR, which is expected soon. This car was teased in January at the Detroit Auto Show; RTR already offers three levels of kit for the current seventh-gen Mustang, including kits for the EcoBoost coupe.
A refresh of the Mustang design is expected later in 2026, and a full redesign is due around 2029. Rumors of the long-discussed four-door Mustang sedan persist, with it possibly being called the Mach-4. That could arrive before the next-generation launches, but arguably the biggest news for Mustang purists involves the electric future. In short, it seems there is no electric future, at least for now. Early plans for an all-electric Mustang coming for the next-gen pony have reportedly been scrapped, if they ever got off the ground.
Other Electric Fords Still Happening
It was already revealed earlier this year that Ford was delaying plans for its larger, full-size future EV projects, with production of at least some models at the upcoming BlueOval City assembly plant in Tennessee reportedly pushed back to 2028. This was supposed to be the new "Trust The Truck" or "T3" pickup, likely as a replacement for the current F-150 Lightning. Ford has also shelved plans for a three-row electric SUV, which could return eventually as an EREV model based on existing renderings of Ford's EREV tech.
The plans for bigger, more expensive EVs were supposedly delayed to allow more focus on the more affordable, smaller, and more modular vehicle platform project, which is also expected to produce a new electric pickup truck model. A next-gen gas and hybrid F-150 is also in the cards but has reportedly been pushed back to around 2028, as well. A refresh of the midsize Ranger truck is coming in 2027, with a full redesign slated by the end of the decade.
